How he proposed

Mallika & Adam met in college in Washington DC. To celebrate their fourth anniversary they went to Annapolis in Maryland, where they celebrated their first anniversary. They went on a walking tour of the city, and the tour guide kept not-so-subtly hinting that, after four years, it was about time for Adam to propose…little did she know. They also asked the concierge for advice on where to go for dinner, and the concierge kept telling them how she was trying to convince her son to propose to his girlfriend.

They decided to toast the event by bringing some champagne out to a little secluded beach before dinner. After they took a sip, Adam had Mallika close her eyes, so he could give her a present. When she opened the present, there was the ring! What a  perfect way to celebrate their anniversary and to start a new phase of their lives!

Wedding Day

Mallika and Adam’s Wedding Day was a great reflection of their personalities. Adam’s love for superheroes, was evident in the cufflinks worn by him and his groomsmen. I love the calla lilies and crystal accents used for the bride’s bouquet and boutonnieres.

Top Honeymoon Destinations

No Comments Honeymoon, wedding planning

Planning your honeymoon is just as important as planning your wedding. Your first vacation as husband and wife is a celebration of your marriage and one of the most romantic trips you will ever take, which is why it is imperative you plan on going somewhere fabulous, romantic and amazing for your honeymoon. Here is a list of some of the top romantic honeymoon destinations for couples.

Costa Rica & Belize

Spending your honeymoon on the beach is still one of the most favourable ways to celebrate your newly married status. However, more couples are forgoing tropical destinations such as the Caribbean and Hawaii for more exotic beach locations such as South America’s Costa Rica. In Costa Rica, honeymooners are still getting the beach vacation complete with clear blue water and white sand beaches, but with the added flair of zip lining, rain forests and surfing. Take your romance to an entirely different level by romancing each other high above the rainforest. Belize, also located in South America, is another exotic honeymoon hotspot for couples. If you are looking to spend your honeymoon exploring Mayan ruins, swimming beneath waterfalls in tropical rainforests and going on jungle tour safaris, Belize is the honeymoon destination for you. Secluded from the typical hotspots of the Caribbean and other South American cities, Belize is for the laid back, adventurous and not for the faint of heart.

No Comments Traditions, Wedding Ceremonies, wedding planning

This week we will be focusing on Sikh Weddings. Sikh Weddings are full of lovely traditions, symbolism, culture, and beautiful values. Our series continues with the Day-of festivities.

On the day of the wedding, the bride and the groom are prepared for the ceremony by the members of their family.

Preparation

At the bride’s home, ornaments made of silver and gold resembling a shape of an umbrella, known as Kalira, are tied to her bangles or chooda by her family members. Kalira symbolizes warm wishes and blessings, and the bride wears them until the wedding ceremony is concluded. Once the kalrias are tied, the bride shakes them on the heads of unmarried friends and girls of the family. According to an old adage, if part of a kalira falls on one of the girl’s, she is next in line to be married.

At the groom’s home, the groom’s sister-in-law and female relatives, go to a nearby well or Gurdwara to fill an earthen pitcher with water, which is later used to bathe the groom. This ceremony is named after the earthen pitcher, known as Gharoli.

For #FashionFriday, today, in collaboration with Rani By Neha Mahajan, we bring you the latest trends in Indian Wedding Fashion for Fall 2011.

Anarkalis are still the craze: Anarkalis suits make a style statement and looks good on everyone! They were worn during the Mughal era and look regal and classy. The Anarkali cut compliments all body types and the kalis or panels of the Anarkali can be increased or decreased based on one’s style. Moreover, almost any neckline and sleeve length works with this style!  This way you can make it as traditional and classy or sexy and modern as your want. An Anarkali makes for a great outfit for a Mehendi or a Sangeet.

In Style: Short ethnic vests are in style and can be used to dress up a Salwar Kameez or transform an old one into a stylish new one. Bonus Tip: You can even wear it over your LBD for an Indo-Western look!

This Anarkali, paired with a short ethnic vest, has a lovely crimson border and beautiful antique gold embroidery.

Continuing with our series of posts written by Gina Mathew, Founder of Couture Rani, today we will feature Indian Fashion Designer Tarun Tahiliani, and his claim to fame.

The Beginning

One of the undisputed greats of Indian fashion, designer Tarun Tahiliani began his career in management after earning a business degree from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. After returning to India, Tahiliani saw the potential of the evening wear and couture market and conceived of a fashion boutique to house the best design talents in India. In 1987 Tarun and his wife Sailaja Launched ‘Ensemble,’ the first of it’s kind multi-brand boutique in Mumbai.  It was during this time that Tahiliani thought about launching his own design label. Although the designer had plenty of raw talent, he did not know how to sew or construct garments. In order to hone his technical knowledge and become proficient in these areas, he enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. Following his return to India from New York, Tahiliani founded his design studio and eponymous label in 1991 and set up base in New Delhi as he believed this was where fashion center would develop in India.

For today’s post, Marigold Events (ME) interviewed Graphic Designer, Carina Herman (CH), of the design studio Little Bird Creative. Little Bird Creative is a design studio dedicated to fashioning wistful stationary for weddings and events. Carina believes that stationary should emote personality and bring each occasion to life.

ME: I understand that you have an art, and graphic design background. Now, how did you get started designing your line of wedding invitations?

CH: Before I started to design wedding invitations, I worked as a graphic designer in the financial industry. The very nature of the industry I was in, limited the colors and designs to be very business like.

Following that I worked for Paper Source, where I worked with the clients’ unique ideas, problem solve and come up with custom design elements for wedding invitations. When Paper Source discontinued its custom line of wedding invitations, I launched my own business focusing on wedding invitations, by the name of Little Bird Creative.

Different colors, themes, and ideas that go beyond the traditional, are very exciting. Moreover, I love the wedding industry, where couples are always happy and positive.

Indian Bridal Jewelry 101

by neha
1 Comment Advice, jewelry, Trousseau, wedding planning

Jewelry is a big part of South Asian Weddings. A huge sum of the wedding budget is spent on this, as it stays with the bride for her lifetime. The terminology for Indian Wedding Jewelry can get complex. We have put together a crash course or you may consider it a glossary for Indian Wedding Jewelry.

Polki: Uncut diamond, studded in gold along with precious or semi precious stones. Polki if often times enhanced by pearls and stone drops. The reverse side of Polki Jewelry is also decorated with meenakari work.

Kundan: Similar style to polki, but semi precious, as instead of uncut diamond, glass stone is used.

Meenakari: Is a traditional Rajasthani Art, where enameling is done over gold, polki, or kundan jewelry with vivid colors and designs.
